Jean (Smith) Nelson - June 04, 1923 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Nauvoo)

Obituary Preview: Jean Smith Nelson, 100, of Peoria, Illinois, formerly of Nauvoo, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2024, at her home in Lutheran Hillside Village.

She was born on June 5, 1923, in Oakville, Iowa, the daughter of David Howard Smith and Lillian Bernice (nee Russell) Smith and was the second oldest of four children. She married Joseph Lewis Nelson of Nauvoo, Illinois, on December 24, 1941, and had three children: Joseph Randall, Jeffry Brooks and Jon Howard. Jean attended Wapello Grade School and graduated from Wapello Consolidated High School.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents: Howard and Lillian; brother: DeLos; baby sister: Fay; and her husband: Joseph Lewis.

Survivors include sister: Joan Smith Rice of Sacramento, California; sons: Joseph of Overland Park, Kansas; Jeffry (MaryAnn) of Chicago, Illinois, and Jon of Verona, Wisconsin; granddaughters: Catherine and Jill and five great grandchildren.

As teens, Jean and Betty Baxter of Nauvoo, Illinois, were friends, and together they attended and later were counselors at the King’s Daughters summer camp in Montrose, Iowa, across the Mississippi river from Nauvoo. After camp, the girls would spend an extra week at each other’s homes. While visiting Betty in Nauvoo, Jean was introduced to a handsome young man, Jody Nelson. They were engaged and later married on Christmas Eve, 1941; a marriage that lasted 62 years until Joe’s death in 2003.

During WWII, Joe enlisted and became an Army Air Corp officer and a pilot. Stationed stateside as an advanced training instructor for fighter pilot cadets, Joe and Jean spent the war years moving to and from numerous Air Corp bases in the South.

Jean found employment and education opportunities at each location. During this time, Jean graduated from Illinois Commercial College, and took continuing education courses at University of Illinois, University of Tennessee, and University of Wisconsin. While stationed in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Jean worked on the Manhattan Project, where the atomic bomb was developed.

After the war the couple moved to Seattle, Washington, where Joe, a pilot by training and an industrial designer by education, worked his dream job at Boeing. Soon, however, they were asked to return to Nauvoo to manage the family’s electric utility, Nauvoo Electric Light and Power Company.

After the power company was sold, Joe built a career in design and management with major manufacturers in several states, while he and Jean raised their three sons.

Jean had many interests, often acquired from her travels, both domestic and abroad. She was a lifelong, voracious reader with always one, if not two, books going at the same time. Her particular interest in history and biographies made for many interesting conversations. Jean was also a highly accomplished seamstress, making her own dresses, coats and a variety of sweaters and wearing apparel. She also enjoyed quilting and loved to gift her works to her children and grandchildren. She continued to enjoy music, growing up as a pianist and later as a follower of the Peoria Symphony.

Jean was a Nauvoo Historical Docent and led many busloads of tourists around historic Nauvoo, explaining the historical impact that both Mormon and later French Icarian settlers had on Illinois history. By 1844, Nauvoo was actually the largest city in Illinois (today, the population of Nauvoo is 950).

As varied as Jean’s interests appear, her love of shopping remained the undisputed focus of many, if not all, her adventures.

Always cheerful, optimistic, and energetic, Jean made friends easily everywhere she went. During her life, Jean was active in several community, service, recreational and church organizations including: the Methodist WSCS, the YWCA, her many Book Clubs and P.E.O.

In 1981 Jean and Joe moved back to Nauvoo to the family home on Knight Street. When Joe retired in 1986, they decided to reside in Nauvoo and travel. They enjoyed attending and even instructing Elder Hostiles around the country. In 2001, Jeff and Mary Ann, then of Peoria, Illinois, invited them to consider living at Lutheran Hillside Village, which had yet to break ground. Jean and Joe moved from Nauvoo to Liberty Village, in Peoria, while work on LHV was under way. They spent a number of days in the mobile offices behind the LHV construction site talking to Phil King about the wonderful experience awaiting them when LHV was completed. They moved in as soon as the “paint was dry,” becoming two of LHV’s inaugural residents. Jean thoroughly enjoyed LHV remarking once that LHV was the longest period of time she had ever lived anywhere.

Joe passed away on July 3, 2003, and Jean continued to live in Lutheran Hillside Village and later Samaritan, until her passing in 2024. At the time of her death, Jean was the second longest resident of LHV.

During her life, Jean accumulated a large collection of books which were donated to Lutheran Hillside Village’s several libraries in her name.

Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Jean will forever be remembered for her cheerful, optimistic, and witty nature and the love she freely and relentlessly gave to her entire family. She was always happy to see us. God Bless you Mom.

We will miss you.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Departed: 11/28/2023 (Nauvoo)

Obituary Preview: Douglass G. Norvell, PhD, of Nauvoo passed away peacefully at his home near Nauvoo on Tuesday, November 28.

Dr. Norvell was born December 1, 1938 in Port Arthur, Texas to Randolph Graham Norvell and Estelle Deason Norvell. He married his college sweetheart, Virginia McFarland, in 1964. They later divorced, and in 1994 Dr. Norvell married Mary Bradley Sartorius.

Preceding him in death was his sister Diane Norvell Bates.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Nauvoo, two sons, Scott Norvell of New York and Stuart Norvell of Little Rock, Arkansas; his daughter, Cynthia Cook Conrow of Charlotte, North Carolina; a stepdaughter, Molly Sartorius of Columbia, Missouri; stepson Nathan Sartorius of Harker Heights, Texas; and a daughter-in-law, Shelley Emling, also of New York. He was blessed with four grandchildren and six step grandchildren — Chris, Ben, and Olivia Norvell, Nathan Conrow, Isaiah, Jazmyne, and Kingsley Sartorius, and Aiden, Miles, and Madeline Poehlein.

Dr. Norvell attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas, graduating in 1956. After high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps in 1957, eight months on active duty and in the reserves until he was honorably discharged in 1964. While in the reserves, Norvell trained with the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare training command, and with the Fleet Marine Force.

After his training in the Marine Corps, Dr. Norvell attended Mexico City College, where he lived at a pension that was a gathering place for members of the Beat Generation such as Jack Kerouac, Williams Boroughs, and Allen Ginsburg. Many residents of the boarding house — Protasio Tagle # 48, Tacubaya — later moved to San Francisco and formed the nucleus of the Haight-Ashbury district in the early 1960s.

After Mexico, he worked as a Merchant Mariner on the SS Brazos and the SS Trinity, earning the rank of Bull Wiper and a Fireman-Oiler license. After two years at sea he came ashore, and worked as a dispatcher for the Sabine Pilots while simultaneously attending Lamar Tech. He graduated from Lamar with a bachelor’s degree in History and Economics in 1964.

After graduation, Dr. Norvell moved to Las Vegas where he worked as a croupier for Consolidated Casino Corporation. Finding the gambling life unfulfilling, he left Las Vegas after a short time and proceeded to Texas A&M University to pursue a graduate degree in economics.

During his first semester he took a course called Economics of Agriculture in Developing Areas taught by Professor John G. McNeely, who subsequently offered him a paid research position that turned into a Ford Foundation Fellowship. He was awarded a PhD by Texas A&M, the only person in his family to be awarded one.

While in graduate school, Dr. Norvell did field research for his master’s and doctoral degrees in the Dominican Republic. He excelled in academic pursuits, publishing scholarly articles such journals as Social and Economic Studies, Caribbean Studies and the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.

In 1970, Dr. Norvell and his young family moved to Afghanistan as a State Department consultant to provide support to the Minister of Agriculture. While in Afghanistan, Dr. Norvell studied the traditional markets and produced two manuscripts now housed in the Library of Congress — the only works in the library dealing with the Afghan markets.

In 1973, after Afghanistan’s king was overthrown, Dr. Norvell and his family moved to Managua, Nicaragua where he taught Agribusiness Management at INCAE, often cited as the best business school in Latin America, and Ms. Norvell ran a cooperative daycare program. While in Nicaragua, Dr. Norvell consulted to the U.S. Agency for Economic Development and the Secretariat for the Economic Integration of Central America.

After INCAE, Norvell went to The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. where he taught Marketing and developed an outreach program in marina management. A nationally recognized voice in the financial management of the rapidly growing marina industry, Dr. Norvell served as a consultant to the City of Miami, the National Marine Manufacturers Association and dozens of private developers. Dr. Norvell wrote a number of manuscripts about marinas that are in the National Agricultural Library.

Maintaining his interest in agriculture, Dr. Norvell consulted to the Drug Enforcement Agency in 1985. Working in the Peruvian Amazon, he developed alternative crops to substitute for the cultivation of the coca leaves used to produce cocaine. Shortly after his departure, the compound where Dr. Norvell worked in Aucayacu, Peru was attacked by mercenaries hired by the Cocaine cartels.

In 1994, Dr. Norvell and his first wife, Virginia, amicably divorced and he married Mary Kathleen Bradley, who taught and retired from the Dallas City Elementary School.

Dr. Norvell’s last teaching post was at Western Illinois University, where he taught marketing and international business until he retired in 1994. At Western, Dr. Norvell and Dr. Robert Morey recognized and documented what they termed “ethnodomination,” or the predominance of particular ethnic groups in selected industries. Following their lead, numerous scholars documented, analyzed and reported on instances of ethnodomination worldwide. Also while at Western, Dr. Norvell joined with Robert Branson to publish the first book, published by McGraw Hill, to apply strategic marketing principles to agribusinesses.

In active retirement, Dr. Norvell continued to work as an expert witness and consultant. Also, he received two Fulbright Scholar Awards — one at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario and another at the Victor Morey Art Institute in Iquitos, Peru. In Peru, he lectured at the Peruvian War College on using public markets as intelligence sources.

Farther into retirement, Norvell and his wife Mary settled in Nauvoo, Illinois where they both enjoyed restoration of a historic stone farmhouse and tending to their garden, orchard and beloved pets, Wookie, a sheep dog, and Dirty Face, Pretty Face and Jake, all barn cats.

Cremation has been entrusted to Schmitz-Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Nauvoo.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 18, 2023 at Calvary Cemetery in Carthage, Illinois, with Fr. Tony Trosley officiating. Military Rites will be presented by the Hanco*ck County Honor Guard.

A memorial fund has been established for the Nauvoo Ambulance Service or PAW Animal Shelter. To leave an online condolence for the family, please visit Dr. Norvell’s obituary at sbbfuneralhome.com.

Sandra Ellen "Sandy" Schwan - August 20, 1954 - September 19, 2023

Departed: 09/19/2023 (Nauvoo)

Obituary Preview: In the early morning hours of September 19th, 2023, Sandy Schwan unexpectedly passed from a heart attack while fulfilling her deeply held dream of returning to her home state of Wisconsin. She left behind her ever-loving husband, John, her proud son, Luke, and her stuck-like-glue, shadow of a dog, Dutch. She will always be remembered by the countless friends and family that were excited to see her return and sad to see her go back to the place she called, “home.” Sandy was 69 years old. Sandy was born “the milk-man’s daughter” on August 20th 1954 to her mother and father- Armond and Evelyn [Wilsmann] Wacholz- in the small town of Neillsville, Wisconsin, where she lived with her parents and her big sister, Sharon Marescalco [Wacholz]. Sandy, her sister, and her folks moved around the state of Wisconsin many, many times; Most of the schools she started out in, she never had the chance to stay in all the way through, constantly having to start and stop semesters while making new friends along the way. One of the last times Sandy and her family moved, she enrolled at the high school where she would later graduate from- East Troy High School [1972]. This is where Sandy met many of her lifelong friends, and continued to see into the future, as a lot of former East Troy classmates would plan multiple class reunions where they would catch up and reminisce about “the good ole’ days.”

After High School, Sandy furthered her education and studied for her Paralegals certificate and obtained other administrative certifications from both Carthage college and Gateway Technical College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where she worked in her graduated field for years. Kenosha continued to be an important city in Sandy’s life because it would later be where she would meet [1978] and marry [1980] her husband John, and adopt her “favorite son,” Luke [1992].

In the years from 1995 to 1996, Sandy and John began the construction of their new home in the small, farm town of Nauvoo, Illinois. While it wasn’t like the familiar home of Wisconsin that she had been so used to, Sandy fearlessly strived to make it her new home. As Luke was growing up, she was involved at nearly every point of his childhood, endlessly finding and volunteering herself for many of the activities and associations that he expressed interests in. For instance, Sandy was a cubmaster for Nauvoo’s local cub scouts and even furthered her leadership within the organization by going on to receive her wood badge: an honor achieved by completing an advance training program for leaders to deepen their skills and knowledge to better lead the organization.

Besides being involved as a leader in town, Sandy was also a leading figure at her local church in Nauvoo, where she taught a Sunday school class and was a youth leader for Christ Lutheran Church’s LYO organization. Along with continuing her paralegal career down south in the Illinois and Iowa area, Sandy also held a job at the Nauvoo-Colusa High School, serving as secretary to the superintendent where she was involved with the Music Boosters fundraising committee for the music department at the Nauvoo-Colusa High School and would later become one of the founding members of the new music boosters committee that was employed at the Warsaw High School- the school that Luke graduated from after Nauvoo’s High School body Combined with Warsaw’s.

Sandy deeply enjoyed sharing her love with all of her family and friends- Even if there was time in between when she had last talked to someone, she could pick up the conversation right where it was left like no time had passed at all. Sandy had a powerful devotion to music. You could always find her at home with the radio on, listening to her favorite “oldies” that she grew up with or, if you were lucky, you might have even heard her practicing piano or singing- both seriously or sillily. She enjoyed flexing and working out her gourmet muscles by cooking and baking and would almost go so far as to invent reasons to bring someone her homemade dishes or freshly baked desserts. Sandy loved her animals, all throughout her life- from the pets her parents had when she was growing up, to the pets she had when she was with John and Luke, Including their cats Shadow, Speedy and Socks, and their Dogs Mickey, Sunny, and Dutch. Sandy was strong, honest, always stood up for her friends and for her own beliefs, and loved to laugh ‘til she was red in the face. Sandy made countless connections with people by being warm and loving and she will be missed and remembered by them all. Sandy’s Survivors include her husband John, her son Luke, her beloved dog, Dutch, four nieces and nephews- Todd Marescalco, Lisa Marescalco, Joe Snell, and Naomi Snell. Her sister Sharon Marescalco and her brothers-in-law Jim Marescalco and Larry Albertson

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and sister-in-law Karen Albertson.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz - Banks & Beals Funeral Home for cremation.

A Memorial Service for Sandy will be held on May 18th, 2024 at 2pm at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burlington, Wisconsin. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at church from 12pm to 1:45pm.

Why are obituaries important?

Who writes an obituary?
